How to Cut and Style Naturally Curly Hair
By Tammy Favata
Naturally curly hair is fabulous! I have always been jealous of people with naturally curly hair. I've always thought their hair looks so gorgeous, full, and easy to take care of. However those that have naturally curly hair might beg to differ and many of them have their fair share of complaints. You have to be careful when you are cutting curly hair, because there are different techniques that should be used then you would with straight hair. Styling techniques for curly hair are also done much differently. When you have naturally curly hair getting the right haircut and knowing how to style it essential for good results.
Here are some methods for cutting naturally curly hair.....
♦ After the hair is shampooed and toweled dry, take a good look at the evenness of the curl. Much of the time the hair is curlier in the back then the front, this could be do to the heavier blood flow. You should avoid layering the back area too much, because it will bounce up. Try and leave it an inch or two longer then you normally would, because you can always go back and cut more later.
♦ Curly hair should be cut without any tension. Curly hair stretches out more then straight hair does and if you are combing too hard you could get uneven lines as a result. Take small sections when you are doing your partings and use the wider part of the cutting comb so you do not pull on the hair.
♦ Do not texture the ends to much or use a razor on curly hair at all, because it will make it look damaged and frizzy. You can do some point cutting with your scissors, but keeping the ends more bluntly cut will give it a more solid curl when it dries. If you really need to thin the hair out, do it closer to the scalp and keep it at least 3 inches away from the ends.

Tips on styling naturally curly hair......
♦ If you like letting your hair air dry you should wash it in the morning or rewet it, because sleeping on your curly hair will give you uneven curls. As your hair dries you want to keep scrunching it. The way you scrunch it is by grabbing a handful of hair and squeeze your ends up to your roots.
♦ If you are going to leave it curly, always use a diffuser when you are blow-drying your hair. Blow-dry it upside down to get body in the top and crown section of your hair and continue to scrunch it all the while.
♦ If you are going to blow dry it straight, make sure to use protective cream or styling serum to protect your hair from the heat of the blow dryer. Blow dry it section at a time to avoid over drying your hair and causing damage.
♦ You can twist your hair to get a spiral look. Take 1 to 2 inch sections and twirl the hair around your fingers one at a time. This can be a little time consuming, but you can do little spiral twists sporadically all around your hair to mix it up.
Cutting and styling natural curly hair can be a challenge to work with, but there a plenty of tricks that you can follow to get a successful outcome.
